Does anyone else feel like January has been the longest month ever?? I swear the past thirty days have felt like ninety. Anyway, you may recall that the month of January was dedicated to giving up 3 things: alcohol, coffee and sugar… here is how I did.

Okay, let’s cut to to the chase– I will have to re-do my no sugar experiment because I did not follow through with it this month (as I eat a piece of dark chocolate). I was so focused on avoiding alcohol and coffee that the “no sugar” part was just a little too much I guess, lol. All in all I had ZERO cups of coffee and only one glass of wine and I am SO PROUD of myself for accomplishing this goal! Yes, I know, I wasn’t 100% alcohol free like I had originally planned… but hey, I did way better than I thought I would.

Whats funny is that I had a harder time with the no-coffee situation. I honestly though I was going to be missing my evening glass of wine, but I was surprisingly totally okay with it (except for the one day that I ended up having a single glass at my parents house). I got into the habit of drinking a kombucha at the end of each day which totally satisfied me. I bought both Brew Dr. and Healthade kombucha brands throughout the month and was totally loving it!

Here is a quick recap on my intentions for January and all the things I planned to incorporate more of in my day to day.

3 Things I Am Giving Up This Month

So I just recapped on the 3 things I was planning to avoid this month… but the 3 things I planned to have more of included: bone broth, water and fresh juices. Although I did not drink a cup of bone broth on a daily basis, I did incorporate it into a lot of my meals such as soups, sauces and rice or quinoa. I had a couple of cups when I was sick which was so comforting! Let me tell you, there is nothing better than a hot cup of bone broth with a little ginger, garlic and a pinch of salt. YUM!!

Water, water, water…. yes, I made sure to bring water with me wherever I went, and filled up my glass at home whenever I remembered, but I probably could have had more to be honest. I did stick to my green juice habit, which was AMAZING!!!! I had never been the green juice type girl and I have to thank my toddler for converting me. He absolutely loves it, and every morning reminds me to make it, so within a week or so, it became a habit. My recipe is super simple and soooo delicious:

  • half bunch of celery
  • 1 whole bunch of cilantro
  • 1 green apple
  • 1-2 inch piece of fresh ginger (peeled)
  • juice of 1 whole lemon
  • 1 tsp spirulina
  • 5 drops vitamin D
  • coconut water (however much you want)

Here are the positive changes that happened this month that I noticed.

Originally, the goal for this mini “elimination” experiment (and inclusions) was to help with my skin. That was my #1 reason. I also wanted to aid my digestion and avoid bloat. Although my skin didn’t clear up as much as I’d hoped I did notice many other positive changes that happened throughout the last 30 days…

I experienced LESS anxiety

Anxiety is something I have been suffering from for many years. It got really bad postpartum and wasn’t able to get it under control after having my son two and a half years ago. I used to take CBD oil daily which helped for a while, but eventually the anxiety took over again. I noticed this month that I did not suffer from any anxiety attacks and felt an overall calm in my day to day. Not sure exactly what could have helped this… could be the fact that I avoided alcohol and coffee, or maybe the green juice was the helpful tool. Regardless, I believe that the combination of all three things aided towards my relief.

I potentially experienced better sleep

Forever I have been a night owl. I tend to stay up late, and still wake up early and suffer the consequences throughout the day. I am always tired. I feel like this month I was able to sleep a bit better than usual. Meaning, I fell asleep faster and I was able to sleep more soundly.

I have been able to start and follow through with a better routine and healthier habits

One of my biggest goals for 2020 is to develop a healthy routine and establish good habits. For some reason, this month I was able to stick to this way better than I have in the past. Throughout the entire month of January I have been able to stay focused and experienced more mental clarity. I truly believe that my old habits were keeping me in a fog. I have been consistent with my green juices, I have been avoiding alcohol and coffee, I have been taking my Silver Fern Brand probiotics every day, and have been focused on feeding myself homemade and nourishing meals while keeping gut health in mind.

So in conclusion, I take the last 30 days as a step forwards towards my natural healing journey. I’ve still got a long way to go before I can confidently and comfortably say that I only need to “maintain my lifestyle”. I used to think I was a very healthy person, maybe I was once upon a time, but my body is saying so differently. My intentions are always good, and I try my best to make the right lifestyle choices that will support my goals. I do also feel that without a healthy mind (and gut) the road is going to be bumpy. At the end of 2019 I faced a lot of reality checks and now know what I need to do in order to heal myself. I am going to keep moving forward, I am going to keep learning, and I am going to do so by still being kind to myself.
